Look at this Firewise USA NFPA Map as of October 14, 2022. The canyons show high and very high wildfire potential, in a year when the annual rainfall measured 9.42* inches near the proposed Canyonland Solar Project, and Boutique Solar which is no longer being considered. (*the amount of rainfall stated is taken from private records kept by a resident living within a one mile radius of the proposed project area). Current information from the US Drought Monitor shows moderate to severe drought in Montezuma County; not the low to moderate drought conditions from 2023 used by Juwi, Inc. in their proposal. 2023 was the year of 85.5 inches of snow at Goodman Point, a rare occurrence!
Proposed facilities are perched on the edge of deep canyons which have poor access due to their remoteness. A wildfire driven by strong winds can move more quickly than emergency response teams can plan for. Pay close attention to the wildfire potential in that scenario and picture what the firefighters face when fighting an inferno under those conditions.
